Orange-Breasted Songbird & Peony is a rare image in my collection with a bright, white background. The marble surface is from a dresser that my Dutch grandparents bought at an auction to furnish their new home in Canada in the 1950’s. My maternal grandmother remains an inspiration and an icon of style in my life. The blue and white bowl and the little salt cellar both belonged to her family. The arrangement features the large, bubblegum-pink Itoh peonies from my garden and the bright yellow butterfly ranunculus grown right here in Ontario. The little bird mentioned in the title, on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum, anchors the composition with a moment of gravity and a reflection on the brevity and preciousness of life.
