Fritillaria & Io Moth is a digital photograph that captures the lushness of a spring garden. Tulips, hyacinths, hellebores and fritillaria from Prince Edward County are arranged in a pewter bowl in front of a dark hand-painted background. Little blue teacups from my Dutch grandmother and two little kinglets are arranged around the vessel. Fritillaria& Io Moth were presented as the keystone image for Field Work, a solo show presented at The Royal Hotel Annex in 2024.
Field Work is a tribute to the labour of the Ontario flower farmers who produce the flora that appear in these photographs, as well as to the ecologists who research our environment and its current crisis. With the inclusion of birds and eggs in this collection, borrowed from the ROM, as well as the butterflies, moths, bees and other fauna that complete the arrangements in the manner of 17th-century Northern Renaissance paintings, I create an ecosystem within the frame of the artwork that reflects the diversity of plant and animal life integral to a healthy and vigorous natural world.
This photograph is available as a 16 × 24 inch archival inkjet print on Hahnemühle fine art paper, with a ½ inch white border for framing, and is offered as a limited edition of 25.
